Winchester Place Thoroughbreds, LLC is a full service nursery and multi-faceted farming operation designed for the nurture, raising and racing of Thoroughbred horses. Winchester Place Thoroughbreds, LLC was originally located amidst a 2,000 acre farming operation on the South Dakota-Minnesota border. In July of 2010 the operation was moved to a farm in the heart of the Kentucky bluegrass only 15 minutes to the Kentucky Horse Park, Keeneland Race Track, the horse farms of Midway, and 5 minutes from Paris. In 2012 Winchester Place acquired the historic Eagle Valley Farm. An additional 562 acres with 101 additional stalls, Eurocisers and state of the art training barns, Winchester Place is adding to its pledge of being a full service farm.

From our first crop of foals bred at the farm we have produced an undefeated two year old champion at Canterbury Park in the K.B. Kid.  Horses owned by Winchester Place have sold at the Keeneland, Ocala and Barrett’s Select Two Year Old inTraining Sales. We are proud of its breeding program. With each new crop we are looking to develop the next really great horse.

After racing, our horses find new homes as show horses and eventers, competing at the highest levels. We are proud of the care given our horses and the management and staff who provide the utmost attention to every detail. At Winchester Place Thoroughbreds, LLC we are dedicated to breeding, raising and racing the outstanding horse.

Spotlight on Sweet Tapper

SWEET TAPPER, winner of the 2017 Lady Canterbury Stakes and G2-placed in the 2016 Mrs. Revere Stakes at Churchill, has been retired from racing by Winchester Place and will be moving on to her new career as a broodmare. She has been bred to Curlin in 2018 but has her eye on Arrogate for a date the year following. What a promising dance card! For now she is happy being turned out daily with her companion, Ms. Bubbette, who is in foal to California Chrome. Love is in the air at Winchester Place Thoroughbreds!

Winchester Place Thoroughbreds, LLC welcomes its first foal of 2018. Born January 22, the bay colt from MY WINCHESTER LADY by BRODY’S CAUSE is the mare’s first foal and our first baby of the New Year. We look forward to watching him grow and develop.

A “Star” is born. It’s a girl! Winchester Place welcomes our second foal of the year on February 8 at 10:45 am. By ASTROLOGY, a big strapping filly out of our TAIL OF THE CAT mare SECRET STORY! Stay tuned, more babies to come!

RED BANNER DAY at Winchester Place Thoroughbreds! IT’S A GIRL! Second filly of the day (February 8). By BROKEN VOW out of our mare MY WANITA, another big, leggy filly for our 2020-2021 racing crop.

Focus on Broodmares

SECRET STORY, an 8 year old mare by TALE OF THE CAT, is out of Irish mare SAND PEBBLES by SADLER’S WELLS. Her second dam, CLANDESTINA, is a half-sister to Triple Crown winner SEATTLE SLEW, European sire SEATTLE DANCER, and English 2000 Guineas winner LOMOND II. Out of MY CHARMER, winner of the Fair Grounds Oaks, and a Reine de Course, we hope that this foal will be able to carry on his family’s distinguished traditions. SECRET STORY has a 2 year old colt named LOUIS GEORGE by RED ROCKS who has begun race training.

MS. BUBBETTE, a Winchester Place earner of $119,650, had a date this week with CALIFORNIA CHROME, 2014 Champion Three-Year-Old Male and Horse of the Year and 2016 Champion Older Horse and Horse of the Year. With MS. BUBBETTE, a descendent of the Jonabell family of champions EPITOME (winner of the 1987 Breeders' Cup Fillies) and GREEN FOREST, Champion Two-Year-Old Miler in France (Grand Criterium-GI, Prix Morny-GI, Prix du Moulin-GI, and Prix de la Salamandre-GI), Winchester Place hopes to re-activate the excellence of her third, fourth and fifth dams: TRULY DO (3 stakes winners including THREE DIAMONDS, track record holder of 7 furlongs in 1:21.2 at Remington Park; HONEST AND TRUE, earner of $108,985, placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in 14 of 15 starts including winning the Fair Ground Oaks and placing in the Kentucky Oaks, dam of EPITOME ($631,755, and dam of ESSENCE OF DUBAI, $2,001,058), TAI TRUE $750,667, and GALLATIN KID $161,942; TELL ME NO LIES, dam of 4 foals, all winners, 3 stakes winners, including 1981 French Champion GREEN FOREST.

MY WANITA, by GLITTERMAN out of MISS LIVI by DEVILS BAG, is an unraced full sister to $2,363,780 earner BALTO STAR (winner of Spiral Stakes-GII, Arkansas Derby –GII, United Nations Handicap-GII, Meadowlands Breeders’ Cup-GII, McKnight Handicap-GII, Red Smith-GII, second Kentucky Cup Classic-GII, Black Tie Affair-GII, Man O War-GII, Queens Co. Handicap-GIII) and also from the family of stakes winner WOODCHOPPER (winner of the Louisiana Derby-GII, second the Kentucky Derby-GI, third Arkansas Derby-GII). My WANITA’S dam line descends tail female to Grade I stakes winner and Grade I producer BIMLETTE and her dam BLOODROOT, 1946 Broodmare Of The Year. MY WANITA has an unraced three-year- old, WATERTONIAN by NEKO BAY, currently at Fair Grounds Race Course with trainer ERIC HEITZMANN awaiting his first start.

MY WINCHESTER LADY is by TIZ WONDERFUL out of MY WANITA by GLITTERMAN. Line-bred 4 x 3 to full siblings RELAUNCH and MOON GLITTER, MY WINCHESTER LADY won her first maiden special race and was brilliantly fast, but not sound, which, resulted in a shortened racing career. Her first dam, Winchester Place’s MY WANITA is a full sibling to multiple graded stakes winner BALTO STAR with earnings of $2,363,780. Descending to BLOODROOT, 1946 Broodmare of the Year, and her daughter BIMLETTE, Grade I winner of the Frizette Stakes at 2 and dam of Grade I winner NO ROBBERY, we’re hoping for some runners to carry on this family line.

SWEET TAPPER, a stakes winner of the Lady Canterbury and G-II placed in Churchill Downs Mrs. Revere Stakes, is by TAPIT out of $1,098,723 earner SWEET TALKER (winner of Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup-GI, WinStar Distaff Handicap-GIII, Dahlia Stakes, Martha Washington Breeders Cup Stakes, second Diana Stakes-GI, Cashcall Invitational-GIII, Regret Stakes-GIII) just had her first date with CURLIN, winner of $10,501,800 (Preakness Stakes-GI, Breeders’ Cup Classic-GI, Stephen Foster-GI, Woodward-GI Jockey Club Gold Cup-GI twice, Dubai World Cup-GI, Arkansas Derby-GII, Rebel Stakes-GIII, and 2007 Champion Three-Year- Old Male and Horse of the Year, 2008 Champion Older Male and Horse of the Year). Another Match Made in Heaven?

Foal number four! CHRISTINA RIDGE had a big, dark bay colt by ITSMYLUCKYDAY on February 20.

2018 Foals

WINTER CAT, a 2014 unraced mare by PARADING out of NEUMANNS CAT, had her first date with MACLEAN’S MUSIC. From a Fred Hooper-bred family of multiple stakes winners and stakes-placed runners, none have won a graded race. For that we are looking to MACLEAN’S MUSIC, who in his first crop produced GI Preakness Stakes winner CLOUD COMPUTING. Very big and athletic, inbred 3 x 3 to STORM CAT, WINTER CAT was being aimed to the racetrack, but we couldn’t find anyone who could consistently stay on her under tack! Let’s hope that all of that fire goes into producing lots of Grade I winners!

BAYOU BULL, by Horse of the Year HOLY BULL and out of the stakes placed mare TWO BAYOU, foaled March 27- a big, dark bay colt by GEMOLOGIST. BAYOU BULL has a yearling by COLONEL JOHN and will be bred to SHAKLEFORD in 2018.

FIONA CAT, by A P WARRIOR out of NEUMANNS CAT by TOMORROW’S CAT, is a stakes-placed mare of $104,571. From a Fred Hooper-bred family of multiple stakes winners and stakes-placed runners, none have won a Graded race. Claiborne Farm’s young sire, LEA, earner of $2,362,398 (winner of the Grade I Donn Handicap, GIII

Commonwealth Turf, Hal’s Hope-GIII, and placing second in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile-GI, Stephen Foster-GI, Woodbine Mile-GI, and third in the Dubai World Cup-GI, amidst many other GII placings), will hopefully bring the right elements to produce graded winners from our FIONA CAT.

DELIGHTFUL RIDGE foaled at 11:30 pm on April 21. She had a very tall chestnut colt by CARPE DIEM. DELIGHTFUL RIDGE is also the dam of our own CUPID’S DELIGHT, with current earnings of over $96,000.

Foaling season came to a close on May 18, with LITTLE BULL RUN giving birth to a bay colt by RUN AWAY AND HIDE. We have high hopes for this crop when they begin their racing careers in a few years!

MY ADVOCATE foaled in Minnesota on March 26 for a Minn. Bred filly by AWESOME PATRIOT. MY ADVOCATE is out of our mare, MY WANITA. A spitting image of her dam, this filly is big and strong with a lovely hip. She is back at the farm in Kentucky, and is pictured here at 5 weeks old.

TWO BAYME had a Minn. Bred colt by BENNY THE BULL on April 18. TWO BAYME is by our own mare TWO BAYOU, winner of over $188,000. Her colt is pictured here back in Kentucky at 2 weeks old.

Our second foal within a few hours! TWO BAYOU had a lovely bay colt by SHACKLEFORD at 1:00 am on April 22. Pictured here at 2 days old, this foal is full of spunk!
